Sophomore Patrick Toomey wrote a Letter to the Editor of the Daily Tar Heel today about a new student group called Youth for Western Civilization and its promotion of hate speech on campus. The recently chartered group claims its goal is to “promote the survival of Western Civilization and pride in Western heritage,” but a quick look at its Web site and a Google search of the organization show that it uses this as a mask for hate speech towards illegal and legal immigrants and people of non-Caucasian descent.
Anonymous tools have been commenting viciously on the Daily Tar Heel Web site and insulting Toomey for his letter (er, clearly in an effort to prove that they are not vitriolic and hateful). It is a bit unfair, since he seems a lot nicer than the president of YWC, senior Riley Matheson of Winston-Salem, who has the following Facebook picture:

The group is bringing Tom Tancredo to campus tomorrow night, the same man who made No. 6 on Rolling Stone’s list of “The 10 Worst Congressmen,” and who made headlines in the past when he said America should threaten to bomb Muslim holy sites in order to deter a nuclear attack on U.S. soil. (The State Department, incidentally, responded to this comment by calling it “absolutely crazy.”)
Curiously, it seems as if the group could save funds by scheduling Gary the Pit Preacher to speak instead and share the same views, but then again, that would eliminate the mystery of where he goes at night (some speculate he morphs into a bat from sundown to sunrise while others contend he has a claim on a corner on 7th floor Davis.)
Some people on the Daily Tar Heel Web site commented that YWC is only viewed as a problem because it’s “OMGZ saying something different from the status quo!!!!!!!” but they might not realize that YWC is similar to organizations like the Ku Klux Klan were in their infant state. Or, worse, maybe they do.
Students are circulating a petition to show that Carolina will not support hate speech on campus at http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/nospaceforhate/
If you agree with this Tancredo dude when he says “If Western civilization succumbs to the siren song of multiculturalism, I believe we’re finished,” (THAT MEANS NO MORE SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE!!!) then don’t sign. But if you are down with “trendy multiculturalism” and don’t want to see YWC “take over student government” (as if that’s even possible…) click the link. Show your support for the Carolina Way…which YWC has clearly forgotten all about.
