“Dude, Wanna Get (Sugar) High?”

Last month, the Wall Street Journal reported that middle school students across the country are engaging in a new smoking trend, one that not even the most Dazed & Confused of stoners could have envisioned: smoking Smarties.

In a move that is lighting up a controversy between parents, educators and the 60-year-old company that produces Smarties, students have taken to crushing the candy into a fine powder, inhaling it into their mouths and then letting it out in such a way that it actually looks like smoke. Parents and educators are uniting in joint efforts to stop the fad.

Numerous “How-to” videos have popped up across YouTube explaining how the process works. Our favorite by far is the one created by Titus Williams, an eighth-grader from South Carolina, who demonstrates it far better than we can and had us rolling with laughter.

We wonder what it would be like if every smoker around the flagpole smoked Smarties instead of cigarettes for just 30 minutes one day…and how it would feel to walk around in the candy-flavored cloud that would emerge. We feel that those concerned should take a deep breath and relax; after all, by the time administrators weed out the troublemakers, the trend will probably have passed.
